An airfield at Crowfield has been in existence since the sixties when it was used primarily for crop-spayers
and the use of the owner. During the seventies a few private owners were allowed to keep and
fly their aircraft from the strip which was known then as Coddenham.
In the early eighties temporary planning permission was granted, with full planning being approved in 1989, at which time a considerable sum of sum was invested to bring the airfield up to licensed standards. This included realigning the runway from 11/29 to 13/31, purchasing a fire tender, building as club house on the side of the hanger, setting up of a flying school. A campaign by local residents about the activities of the airfield let to a inquiry, the result of which led the local council to place a discontinuance order on the full planning permission and set various restrictions on the operations at the airfield. This meant it was not viable to run the airfield as a licensed airfield and it has returned to it unlicensed state |
